Hospitality and retail: new foundation apprenticeships, one standard defunded
Entry-level provision reshaped rather than reduced — though not for everyone.
Two foundation apprenticeships were approved in April 2026: Catering and Hospitality at Level 2 and Retail Service, Supply and Administration at Level 2, both running eight months at £3,500. They are aimed at 16 to 21 year olds, and at 22 to 24 year olds with an EHC plan or care experience.
At the same time Cleaning Hygiene Operative at Level 2 is one of the sixteen standards losing funding from September 2026, removing a funded entry route into facilities and cleaning work.
The rest of the route is stable. Hospitality Accommodation Team Member at Level 2 and Food and Beverage Team Member at Level 2 sit at £6,000, Pastry Chef at Level 3 at £11,000 and Lead Baker at Level 3 at £9,000, none carrying recent changes.
What it changed from: entry into hospitality and retail through apprenticeships previously meant a full Level 2 standard running twelve months or more, which suited neither the seasonal shape of the sector nor learners who were not yet ready to commit.
What follows: the eight-month foundation route fits the sector's rhythm considerably better and is worth building recruitment around, particularly for September and January intakes. The age restriction is the constraint — there is no equivalent funded entry route for an adult career-changer into hospitality, and with Cleaning Hygiene Operative going, the options for over-25s at Level 2 on this route narrow further.
